3 Tips for Success in Your Role as a Network Admin

If you have decided that you want to be a network administrator, then you might as well be the best one that you can be! Network admins are the information highways of the server world, because they are the ones talking to the servers and by extension the server admins, and if you can handle the responsibility by following these tips, you will be good to go on the path of success as a network admin!

1. Learn To Use Automation

So many people, not just network admins, but people, get so caught up in the nitty gritty of day to day work. Then they are the same people who wonder where exactly their time went during the day.

If you find yourself constantly doing your team’s busy work or the smaller tasks that need to be done, rather than focusing your time and efforts on the bigger picture, then you might want to work smarter and not harder by having the computer do the work for you.

Learning how to code and making sure that you have the skills necessary to make a computer work for you is going to help you be more successful as a Network Admin. Because all of your time will be spent solving those bigger problems and not just handling busy work that could be automated.

2. Focus On Career Growth

If you are just starting your career as a Network Administrator, then you might be focusing on the fact that you got the job, rather than how to start climbing the ladder. But even if you don’t have the desire to start climbing the ladder and seeing what career growth looks like, you should be looking at the job you have now and seeing how it could help you out much later.

Are you taking on skills or challenges that will be useful to have experience with later in your journey? Are you working for a company that might prove to be a good reference? Are you learning skills that will always be applicable? Well, if that is the case, then you might need to make sure to put all of that on your resume moving forward.

The tasks you are doing now as a network admin might just be the tasks that propel you to a brand new career, so if you aren’t sure how to touch up your resume, be sure to look at these network admin resume examples.

3. Pick A Vendor And Familiarize Yourself With Them

Whether you get to pick the vendor whose hardware your servers and network use or you find yourself getting stuck with whatever the main company uses, make sure to get integrated with your vendor and learn about what they offer.

Many Network Admins pick one vendor for life and stick with them, and also take the time to learn the products they offer and ask questions about which types of products are going to be the best for the network.

So take a bit of time each day and attempt to familiarize yourself with what your vendor offers, because that knowledge will come in handy whenever you need to make a network upgrade!

Use These Tips To Get Ahead

While many network admins tend to know the hardware and software side of their new job extremely well, having some human skills to effectively communicate, build a team, and think ahead will really set you up for success and ensure that you can take the career path of being a Network Admin to brand new heights.
